A celebration of the life of Gretchen Carhartt Valade at Robert C. Valade Park in Detroit (June 17, 2023)
Gretchen was Detroit’s “Angel of Jazz” and a dear friend to so many people. Her philanthropy benefitted the Detroit Jazz Festival, Wayne State University, and many other organizations. This was a celebration of her life that would have made Gretchen proud. As the sun was shining brightly, the event started with a procession led by Dr. Valade’s Brass Band. It was followed by performances from bands led by Ron English, Michael Saporski, and Kimmie Horne. MCs for the event included Willie Jones and Stix Hooper.
